North Side Hungarian restaurant Huszar is making some big changes.
The restaurant has just announced that it added two new chefs from Hungary to the kitchen, and will be expanding their menu and their hours.
Current executive chef Peter Gurbacs, originally from western Hungary, will continue to lead the kitchen, while new chefs Karoly Schmidt (a native of Budapest) will take over the pastry program, and Miskolc native Geza Ambrus will become the restaurant’s sous chef. Gurbacs, Schmidt and Ambrus have been granted cultural exchange visas, which allow them to share their Hungarian culinary expertise in the United States.
The menu will feature a new slate of Hungarian specialties, including Sour Cherry Soup, Langos (savory fried garlic dough), Brassoi Apro Pecsenye (a pork tenderloin dish with origins from the Transylvanian town of Brasso), and Krumplis Teszta, paprika potatoes and homemade square-cut noodles.
The dessert menu will also be expanded, and will include traditional Hungarian desserts like Dobos Torte, Bread Pudding, Kremes and Black Forest Cake.
With the restaurant’s expanded menu comes expanded hours. Huszar will now be open seven days a week, Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 10:00 p.m.
Huszar is also bringing back their popular Traditional Bacon Roast events, with the next one scheduled for Saturday, May 19 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. During the event, guests will roast slab-bacon over open fire pits, which is then served on fresh sourdough bread with peppers, onions, and tomatoes. Tickets to the event are $35 per person, and include a shot of brandy, a Karlovacko beer, desserts and live music. Reservations can be made by calling 412-322-8795.
