Eclectic boutique design company, Schoolhouse, has officially opened a retail space in East Liberty.
Schoolhouse produces and sells a wide range of vintage-inspired pieces, including lighting, hardware, home decor, and furniture. The Portland Oregon-based brand operates from their 125,000 square-foot factory on Nicolai Street in Portland. From concept design to production, this is the place where the magic happens. They also have a retail store in Tribeca, New York – and now, Pittsburgh.
According to the brand’s website, Schoolhouse Electric was “founded by Brian Faherty in 2003 following his discovery of a long-lost collection of cast-iron glass shade molds inside an old storage warehouse in Port Jervis, New York.”
The serendipitous molds were the genesis for the brand. After the discovery, Faherty and his Schoolhouse team worked to restore the molds back into production. From there, the company continued to grow to where they are today.
The East Liberty outpost is the brand’s first retail store in over 10 years.
Schoolhouse Pittsburgh is located inside of the former police bureau building on Broad Street in East Liberty. Dubbed “The Detective Building,”Brian Faherty and the Schoolhouse have spent the past three years rehabilitating this long-abandoned building.
The first floor of the building is occupied by the Schoolhouse storefront and The Bureau, a new coffee shop concept by The Vandal team. Above the store and coffee shop there are three floors of office space operated by Beauty Shoppe coworking company. Every floor features curated décor from Schoolhouse.
Schoolhouse stated on their Instagram, “Today, this icon of 1970’s-era New Formalism architecture has been brought back to life.”
The appeal to open a space in Pittsburgh began with the founder’s interest in the city. According to the Schoolhouse blog, “Brian has traveled through Pittsburgh since the early days of Schoolhouse while en route to the Schoolhouse glass shade manufacturer in West Virginia. The culture and energy of the town appealed to him from the beginning.”
