Sometimes we get lazy, and put off doing things that we have been meaning to do… for a long time. Like, writing our Five Spot Friday list of the five things that we’re eating right now in Pittsburgh. It was on our to-do list for so long, and just didn’t happen. But, we’re changing that now! We’re bringing back the series, and will post picks every Friday from different Pittsburgh chefs, artists, business owners, and people-about-town so you’ll know exactly what should be on your ‘must-eat’ list.
Let’s kick things off, shall we?
Fried Buttermilk Chicken at the Whitfield: NEXTPittsburgh was nice enough to let us sing the praises of our current favorite salad, so we’ll just direct you over there to see exactly why we’re obsessed with this Pittsburgh staple. Well, we can give you a few hints: French fries, fried chicken, and buttermilk ranch. (The Whitfield at the Ace Hotel, 120 S. Whitfield St., Pittsburgh, PA)
Chad’s Vanilla Ice Cream at Millie’s Homemade: Let’s be clear: All of Millie’s Homemade homemade ice cream flavors are pretty stellar. No matter what flavor you walk out with, we can bet that you’re gonna be pretty happy. But the last time we stopped in the scoop shop, we bypassed all of the exotic, seasonal selections (though with Rhubarb sorbet on the menu right now, we definitely have to go back) for their classic Chad’s Vanilla. It’s hard to describe just how good this vanilla is. Don’t take our word for it – just go try it for yourself. (Milie’s Homemade Ice Cream, 232 S. Highland Ave., Pittsburgh, PA)
Hotcakes at Pamela’s Diner: Believe it or not, we became fans of Pamela’s diner pretty late in the game. But when we finally fell, we fell hard. They’re known for their ‘famous’ crepe hotcakes, and for a good reason. Super thin, super light, and then served flat on your plate or rolled and stuffed with something delicious (Chocolate Banana is good, but we just like them plain), they take a diner breakfast to the next level. And the best part? They come out fast. (Pamela’s Diner, various locations)
Chicken On A Stick in the Strip District: The Strip has always held a special place in our heart, and we know every restaurant and food stall like the back of our hand. And one we keep coming back to is the grill outside of Korean grocer Sam Bock for their Chicken On A Stick. The sweet, flavorful chicken is never dry, and it’s the perfect bite to eat while you’re walking up and down the street. (Sam Bok Korean Grocery, 1735 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh, PA)
Cinnamon Roll Donut at Oram’s Donut Shop: The first thing you need to know about the Cinnamon Roll Donut at Beaver Fall’s Oram’s Donuts is that it’s not really a cinnamon roll. It’s not really a donut, either. It’s kind of this weird hybrid of both, taking the best parts of a cinnamon roll (cinnamon, sugar), and the best parts of a donut (yeasty dough), and smushing them together. You’ll take one look and see how big they are, and you’ll be tempted to only order one. Don’t do that. Order two, and save one for later – with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, your breakfast treat just became the best dessert of the week. (Oram’s Donut Shop, 1406 7th Ave., Beaver Falls, PA)
